Technology Overuse in Kids and Teenagers

Updated: Sep 19, 2024

It's no secret that technology overuse has become a huge issue with not only teenagers and kids in the past few years but has skyrocketed with adults as well, especially after the covid 19 pandemic.

We were already becoming a more disconnected society before March 2020, but after the lockdowns and isolating from society, people were desperate to connect. So where did we all turn? Our tech…

Kids are no exception to this. In fact, month after month of being locked in our homes, our teens and kids had no choice but to adapt and “survive.” With none of us being prepared for what was about to come, everyone was flying by the seat of their pants, and the repercussions of that year and a half were significant and substantial.

Anxiety and depression rates rose to numbers we had never seen before as a society, as well as addiction rates and a general reporting of “numbness” amongst people that never sort of faded away.

So, knowing all this, why is no one doing anything about this? Why are the kids and teens, as well as parents being hung out to dry to fend for themselves with this new epidemic of technology overuse, to the point of addiction, in some.

We all know it's a problem, yet the schools barely acknowledge it, and the system is yet again failing the mental health of our children.

Here at Koster Kare, we don't sweep these types of issues under the rug because they may seem “too large” to tackle. We are aware that sustainable change can only occur through small, consistent, incremental steps. We won't be walking into a home ripping away technology from everyone, as extremes don't work. We work with teens, children, and families to make subtle, slow changes, as it has been proven that these are the changes that will turn into habits, then into patterns.

The human brain is malleable and can change. So why aren't more institutions creating programs and help for our youth in this area?
